A new Montessori school serving grades 1-6 will open on the 5000 block of Baltimore Avenue next fall.

Hyacinth Montessori, a “micro school,” is accepting applications now for the 2022-2023 school year. The school is starting with a small class of about 10 students, but founders Madeleine Nutting and Carmen Montopoli hope to grow the tuition-based school to a full enrollment of 25 students.

The Montessori approach includes guided hands-on, self-directed activities and collaborative play.

“Each child progresses through standards-aligned learning at their own pace,” Montopoli, a trained Montessori teacher with several years experience leading classrooms, wrote in an email. “Elementary students thrive when supported to create a learning community in which each child is valued for their own interests and contributions.” Continue Reading

Share your memories of Baltimore Ave and be part of Rehearsing Philadelphia project

Posted on 04 January 2022 by WestPhillyLocal.com

Rehearsing Philadelphia, a citywide art-based public project created by composer and artist Ari Benjamin Meyers and produced by Drexel University’s Westphal College of Media Arts & Design and the Curtis Institute of Music, is calling on folks who have fond memories of Baltimore Avenue.

You can share your stories, anywhere from The Woodlands to 50th street, by leaving a voice recording at (267) 202-5157 or share your thoughts here. With the public’s help, Rehearsing Philadelphia will pick locations for 15 public rehearsals as part of the project’s Duet module. Your recording may also appear on “Rehearsing Radio.”

Rehearsing Philadelphia explores how we can come together as a city through musical rehearsal. It focuses on rehearsing as a way to attain perfection, which is then repeated in performance. The rehearsals will take place from March 25 to April 10. For more information, visit: www.rehearsingphiladelphia.com.

A new cafe, Vagrant Coffee, has recently opened on 45th and Baltimore, at the former Milk & Honey location. The owners, Joshua Dew and Jared Cate, are entrepreneurs from Baltimore who already have three Vagrant locations there. It’s a relatively young business, started in 2017, and Vagrant Coffee in West Philly is their first venture outside of Baltimore.

Vagrant Coffee is also known for bringing their mobile equipment (mobile coffee and espresso bars) to parties, events and even offices. One of the reasons why they chose the name “Vagrant” was to emphasize their mobility.

Apart from their specialty coffee and in-house made pastries, the new coffee shop offers breakfast, sandwiches and salads, all available for pick-up only at this time due to COVID restrictions. There is some outdoor seating, too.

You can check out their menu and order online here.

Vagrant Coffee is open Mon-Fri 7 a.m.-5 p.m.; Sat & Sun 8 a.m.-6 p.m.

‘Baltimore Crossing’ condo development project underway near 51st and Baltimore

Posted on 29 October 2019 by WestPhillyLocal.com

The “Baltimore Crossing” condo construction project is underway near 51st and Baltimore. This is a three-unit building north of Baltimore (Photo courtesy of Holly Mack Ward & Co).

Folks looking to buy a home in West Philly have usually had two options: a pricey Victorian or a more affordable (but still pricey) rowhome. Developers have mostly been reluctant to build condos – essentially apartments that are for sale rather than for rent. That might be starting to change with “Baltimore Crossing,” a new condo development project currently under construction near 51st and Baltimore.

The project includes three buildings – a three-unit building north of Baltimore (at 717 S. 51st St), a five-unit building south of Baltimore (at 732-734 S. 51st), and a townhouse at 5135 Webster St. The construction of the north building is in an advanced stage, and the foundation has been laid for the south building.  Continue Reading

‘PHilthy Paws’ self-serve pet wash opens at 47th and Baltimore

Posted on 17 September 2019 by WestPhillyLocal.com

Did you know that you don’t have to wash your dog alone at home, in your bathtub or sometimes even your kitchen sink? You can do it in a specially made tub while socializing with other dog owners. And after you’re done, you don’t need to clean up all the mess. That’s what a self-serve pet washing shop, “PHilthy Paws”, which has just opened at 47th and Baltimore, is for.

In addition to the tub, PHilthy Paws also provides tools to clean your animal (shampoos, brushes, dryers, and more) that are included in your fee – ranging from $12 to $18 per wash, depending on the size of your pet. Dogs as large as 100+ pounds are welcome, too.  Continue Reading
