57-year-old man arrested during burglary on 4000 block of Spruce; plainclothes police officer injured

Posted on 27 May 2015 by WestPhillyLocal.com

Plainclothes police officers arrested a 57-year-old male during a burglary on the 4000 block of Spruce Street on Tuesday. The buildings on this block are mainly used for off-campus student housing. The man was caught inside a three-story twin house shortly after 2 p.m. when he exited an apartment with a bag filled with stolen items, including a $1000 Mac Book laptop, according to police. A plainclothes police officer was injured during a struggle which ensued when he and another officer tried to detain the suspect. The injured officer was taken to the hospital and treated for a head injury and a broken hand.

Plainclothes police observed the suspect earlier that day when he was first sitting on the steps of one of the buildings and then was walking up and down the block, according to a police report. The officers matched the male’s appearance to an earlier crime alert in the area. When the man entered one of the buildings, the officers followed him and heard some banging noise coming from the second floor. When the officers went to investigate they noticed that the door of one of the apartments was damaged, and then they observed the suspect exiting the apartment with a bag in his hand. The suspect dropped the bag and ran a few feet down the hallway but then turned back and punched one of the officers, according to police. The suspect was arrested after a short struggle.

Police say that this man is also suspected in other burglaries in the area. On Tuesday, a police source said that burglaries were a concern right now.

Latest robbery reports; burglaries “definitely an issue,” say police

Posted on 26 May 2015 by WestPhillyLocal.com

Police have released some details on a few robberies that took place in the area last week.

Two teenagers were arrested for an attempted mid-day robbery on May 20 on the 4200 block of Pine Street. The incident happened at around 2 p.m. when the suspects, 16 and 18 years old, walked by a 25-year-old man, then stopped and attempted to rob him. The man resisted and the suspects ran off, according to police. They were caught a few blocks away. No injuries were reported.

A gunpoint robbery took place on May 22 at around 11 p.m. on the 4900 block of Spruce Street. Police say a young man ran from behind a 26-year-old woman, who was on her way home from work, and cut her off. He then pointed a small black gun with two barrels at her and demanded her bag. He also took the woman’s phone from her pants pocket. After robbing the woman the man and another male who was on a bike fled north on 49th Street, according to police. The woman wasn’t injured.

Also on May 22, a 19-year-old male was arrested at 52nd and Kingsessing after robbing a 22-year-old woman. The robbery took place shortly after 10 p.m. on the 4600 block of Chester Avenue when the suspect approached the woman and robbed her of her pocketbook which contained several items. The man fled the scene on a bike. Police recovered the victim’s phone.

There have also been several burglaries in the area in the last two weeks, and a police source says that burglaries “are definitely an issue right now.” We’re trying to get more information. See the map below (source: Crimereports.com) for the reports of robberies and burglaries from May 12 to May 26, 2015.

Latest Crime Reports: Police looking for three serial robbers; Burglary arrest

Posted on 19 February 2015 by WestPhillyLocal.com

Police are looking for three men between 18 and 20 years old who they say have been involved in at least four robberies in West Philly over the last two weeks. The first robbery took place on Feb. 8 near 38th and Baring in Mantua, according to police, when the suspects robbed a pizza delivery man at gunpoint. An undisclosed amount of cash was taken in that robbery. Police say the same three men used a gun to rob a 27-year-old woman near her apartment entrance at 44th and Pine on Feb. 12. They reportedly took the woman’s phone and purse.

The third robbery took place in Powelton Village, near 31st and Hamilton on Sunday, when the men robbed a 20-year-old woman, also at gunpoint, near her apartment, according to police.

The latest robbery happened on Monday, Feb. 16, when the suspects responded to a Craigslist ad by a person who was selling a paintball gun. The seller brought the paintball gun to a location near 41st and Spring Garden where he was robbed at gunpoint by the same three men, according to police. Burglary suspect hangs around scene a little too long

Posted on 03 October 2014 by Mike Lyons

This one was about as easy as it gets for police. A resident on the 4300 block of Baltimore Avenue reported a burglary after she was awoken just before 2 a.m. on Thursday by noises and a first floor security alarm.

The resident found a window open, several thousand dollars worth items missing from the first floor of the house and cinder blocks stacked outside below the window. Police arrived to find many of the items in an alley near the home. As the scene investigation continued, police noticed someone peering around the corner of a building on 44th Street. When the man reached for his ID after being stopped by police, an i-Phone that was later identified as the resident’s fell out of his pocket.

The man, 20-year-old Lakim McDonald of the 5600 block of Washington Ave., faces burglary and related charges.

Joe Murray of Southwest Detectives tweeted about the arrest earlier today:

The Southwest Police Division has issued a burglary alert in some neighborhoods and is warning residents of an increase in burglaries by distributing flyers in mailboxes, according to West Philly Local readers. The alert also includes tips on how to prevent a burglary at your residence. We wrote about an increase in residential burglaries in the University City area last month.

UPDATE: We learned that the 18th police district is putting out flyers when there is a burglary on the block now. “Kind of a heads up as to what’s going on,” says Joe Murray of Southwest Police Detectives.

Posted on 03 January 2014 by WestPhillyLocal.com

UPDATE (1/3/14): Police have released surveillance video of the suspect and are asking for public’s assistance in identifying him. On the video, a medium built male wearing dark clothing, possibly a jacket, can be seen picking up a brick from a nearby dumpster and smashing the front door at Fiesta Pizza (45th and Baltimore). Then, the suspect can be seen riding a bike near the Mill Creek Tavern at 42nd and Chester and then breaking in and burglarizing it.

If you have any information about these crimes or the suspect, please contact the Southwest Detectives Division at 215-686-3183/3184. You can also submit a tip by calling 215-686-TIPS (8477) or text a tip to PPD TIP or 773847.

1/2/14: Police are searching for a person who has been breaking into local businesses through smashed doors or windows and burglarizing them. Three more incidents have been reported since West Philly Local‘s post about the Green Line Cafe burglary on December 23. The Mill Creek Tavern, located at 42nd and Chester Ave, and Best House Pizza at 43rd and Baltimore were burglarized shortly after 5 a.m. Wednesday morning, according to police. The front window was also smashed and a register was stolen at Fiesta Pizza, located at 4518 Baltimore Ave, on Christmas Day.

Two businesses, Rx The Farmacy and Cafe Saigon, were burglarized in a similar manner in August, 2013. The burglary pattern is very similar in all the cases, with the perpetrator using a brick to smash windows and stealing registers or cash from them, according to police.

There are few details on the suspect. Police are working on the release of surveillance video and describe the suspect as a black male dressed in black and riding a bike. The burglar usually hits between 3 and 5:30 a.m.
