54-year-old Anthony Dent was arrested in connection with two recent burglaries, including the burglary at City Tap House, according to police. Both burglaries were captured by surveillance cameras. On January 18, at 7:30 a.m., Dent apparently entered the City Tap House building located at 3925 Walnut Street, took a laptop computer from an office, then stole assorted meats from the freezer and fled through the back emergency exit door.
On January 26 around 5:30 a.m. Dent entered a building located on the 3800 block of Chestnut Street by prying the side door open with a large screwdriver, took some items, including assorted power tools, and placed them in a parked vehicle. He then returned to the building several times for more items, according to police. The suspect was captured on surveillance video on 39th Street where he placed the tools into a parked silver Volvo XC90 and fled.

Last fall we reported that a resident helped prevent burglary when he saw an unknown man standing on his neighbor’s porch and called 911. A similar situation occurred earlier this week, according to police.
On Tuesday, Feb. 12, at about 11:15 a.m., officers from the 18th district responded to a “burglary in progress” call on the 4500 block of Sansom Street. A witness told police that he had observed a man trying to force his way through the front window. The witness chased the man from the porch and police found him a block away on another front porch on the 4400 block of Sansom.
Police chased the man down Sansom and observed him discard a black handgun before apprehending him after a brief struggle on the 4400 block of Chestnut Street. Police recovered the loaded handgun, which had been reported stolen. The suspect was carrying a bag that contained an Amazon Kindle, two digital cameras, two iPods and a tablet computer. Police say he confessed to burglaries on the 4500 block of Pine Street, the 400 block of S. 45th Street, and the 4500 block of Sansom.

A neighbor and West Philly Local reader, Brendan, emailed us that his apartment on the 4400 block of Baltimore Ave was broken into and robbed last week, on Thursday, Sept. 27. Brendan says that the burglar(s) got away with his wife’s new Schwinn Sporterra (2012) bike. It’s a size 52 black bike with white writing on it. They also got off with an old Playstation 2.
Brendan says that he and his wife are not very well off people by any stretch and that their apartment is mostly full of things of sentimental value. “The bike is what really broke my heart…because I just bought it for my wife this past summer after saving up and sacrificing a lot to give my wife a new bike… We’ve lived in this apartment for 7 years and have never felt insecure. We love this neighborhood and can not stand the idea that we were so brazenly violated like this in a community that we love so much,” Brendan writes.
Police suspect that juveniles might have been involved in this robbery based on what they stole and some other details.
This incident taught Brendan a couple of things about how to protect yourself in case your apartment gets burglarized – to get renter’s insurance and to write down your bike’s serial number.

A resident helped prevent burglary the other night by reporting suspicious activity on his neighbor’s porch.
On Tuesday, at approximately 12:10 a.m., he was driving on the 800 block of S. 48th Street looking for a parking space when he saw a man standing on the porch of one of the houses, police said. The neighbor knows the owners of the property and thought the person’s activities were suspicious. When the man opened the window and started climbing into the house the neighbor called the police.
Two police officers were nearby and quickly arrived at the location. They caught the suspect near the front windows of the home, both of which were pushed open, and took him in custody. Police say that one of the windows had an air conditioning unit that was pushed in. Nothing was taken from the house.
According to police, the suspect is a known burglar in the area. “Witness did an incredible job. Noticed a stranger on his neighbor’s porch and made the right call,” tweeted Detective Joe Murray from the Southwest Detectives.

A 21-year-old Asian female was robbed at 1:50 a.m. on Thursday, March 15. The woman was walking toward 45th and Pine from Baltimore Avenue with a group of friends when she was pushed from behind and her iPhone was snatched.
Police say that the victim and her friends were likely followed by the attackers (three 17-18-year-old black males) to 45th and Pine from Baltimore Avenue. Two of the attackers were wearing hoodies, grey and white. The description of the third attacker was not provided, according to Lt. John Walker of the Southwest Detectives.
Walker also passed information regarding a series of burglaries that have occurred in the neighborhood this month (see map below) when a few residences were broken into and electronics were stolen. It appears that the same person or a group of people were involved in more than one of them, Walker says. Walker is asking residents to apply caution and to never leave your doors unlocked and windows open when you’re away.
