Clark Kent, famous rescue cat, dies

Clark Kent.

Many of our readers might remember a series of stories we published in the fall of 2011 about Clark Kent, an abandoned and starved cat found in Clark Park and rescued by our reader James. That story and the following stories were shared hundreds of times on our blog and by other media and animal rescue organizations, prompting people from all over the world to donate thousands of dollars for the cat’s expensive treatment (Clark Kent suffered from a severe kidney condition because he accidentally ate pieces of metal rummaging through garbage while trying to survive on his own for many days).

Unfortunately, Clark Kent lost his battle with the disease on Friday, as City Kitties, a local cat rescue organization announced on their Facebook page.

“He went peacefully at home, surrounded by his family, almost a year to the day after his adoption. We are thankful to everyone who allowed us to provide him comfort during the time he had left. We are especially grateful to Jackie for providing him with love, care and a wonderful home. RIP little guy,” the announcement reads.

Although we’re sad that Clark Kent wasn’t able to make it, it is comforting to know that he received so much support and had someone who loved and took care of him at the end of his life.

Foster kittens, Rick and Biscuit, looking for a permanent home

Posted on 16 January 2013 by WPL

rick&biscuitThese handsome, affectionate, fun, and sweet foster kittens are looking for a home together. They are all up to date on shots for the next year and have been neutered, and microchipped so they can go home with you ASAP! Check out this message from a neighbor, Sarah, who’s fostering them for ACCT Philly:

“Rick (tabby, boy) is what we refer to as rick-tastic! He’s a ridiculously sweet little goofball! You will know the second he is happy as can be because he looooves to purr. With big brown eyes that will melt your heart, this guy could get away with murder. But he doesn’t take advantage of his cuteness! He’s well-behaved, stays off counters, and uses the scratching post and litterbox. He’s not crazy all-over-the-place wild like many kittens, but he IS adventurous and makes his own fun! I’ve found him climbing up a screen-like radiator cover and balancing on a bag full of other plastic bags. We like to describe him in this house as “squishy,” and he’s definitely the squishiest little kitten I’ve ever met. I could hold him tight to my chest and “squish” cuddle him all day. Rick was brought to ACCT as a stray with his brother and sister. They were too small to be adopted, so I picked them up to foster.

Biscuit (tuxedo, boy) is Rick’s best friend. These two LOVE each other so much! They follow each other around the house to play, rough-house, cuddle, snuggle, and groom each other. They make each other purr all day long. Biscuit is super friendly, lovey, and affectionate. He is quite adamant about playing. It can be too much for some cats. He’s pretty good about adjusting based on feedback, but he may be too much for kitties who are more docile. Biscuit is a charmer. Everyone who meets him falls in love. He loves to be in your lap and makes those awesome chirps that cats make when he runs up to you. He always greets me at the door when I get home from work with snuggles. Biscuit was found by a friend of a friend as a stray on Hazel St. in West Philadelphia. I took him to ACCT to be scanned for a chip and looked for possible owners to no avail, so he became my foster.”

Sarah said that January adoption price is $75 for both of them with the “adopt a buddy” program. She will definitely consider separating them, but Rick and Biscuit are the cutest pair and Sarah would love for them to find a home together. Please contact her at: rstlne36912@gmail.com with any questions.

Adopt-two-Cats: Elsa and Emily

Posted on 05 December 2012 by WPL

Elsa.

Elsa and Emily are lovely, petite tuxedo kittens (about 10-12 months old), rescued this past summer near Penn’s campus. Elsa is the cutest grey & white girl, with a white triangle outlining her little grey nose. She was a bit shy at first, but has become quite the cuddle bug and is very receptive to hugs and kisses from her foster mom & dad. Elsa has an irresistible raspy chirp (much like a lion cub’s), is quite chatty, and purrs whenever you’re nearby.

Lovely Emily is the black & white babe. She adores belly and chin rubs. She’s got a streak of tomboy in her; loves to chase and wrestle with our big tabby guy! They’re just the sweetest and gentlest of girls. Both are fine with being held, and will be happy to sit on your lap and be combed and fussed over. Neither is over demanding of attention. Elsa and Em’ have become companion kitties since their respective rescues, so we would love for them to be adopted as a pair.

Emily.

Kitty FACTS: The girls have been fully vetted (tested, spayed, vaccinated, microchipped) and are disease free. Paperwork from their vetting will be included, along with a few of their favorite things. Indoor only. Kitties must keep their claws! They eat a primarily canned food diet. Excellent litterbox manners. Okay with gentle dogs. Appropriate screening and a willingness to contribute towards their vetting (or donation to a local rescue group) shouldn’t be a problem for potential adopters. Feel free to email with any questions about the girls or to arrange a meeting. Including a brief history of your experience with kitties, description of current home situation, and the name of your vet would be most helpful.

Adopt-a-Cat: Little Orange Boy and Iggy

Posted on 15 November 2012 by WPL

These two terrific kittens are looking for a home! They would make a great pair to adopt together – they keep each other endlessly entertained and exercised, but when they’ve burned off all their kitten energy, love to curl up in your lap. They are spayed/neutered, and have been dewormed and begun their first vaccinations. They are being fostered in West Philadelphia. If interested, please contact elizabeth.elzer@gmail.com.

Little Orange Boy: This little man is soooo sweet. He came down with a nasty kitty cold in the shelter, and was pretty sick for a while, but he’s all better now, and we think all the handling he got during treatments made him more attached to people. Since he is so social, we would prefer he go to a home where there are other animals, or at least where people around much of the time. He loves to curl up with us, his sister, and our dog.

Iggy: This little girl is pretty special. First, she has a pretty tortie coat that she is very fastidious about. Secondly, when she had the same kitty cold as the rest of her family, she was by far the best about medication. And finally, she is a smartypants — she used the litter box from day one, and she was the only kitten to figure out how to escape all the makeshift barriers we used to keep them in the living room – we would come home to find her curled up in the office with our dog, with the rest of her family back in the living room! We prefer that she go to a home where there are other animals, or at least where people are around much of the time.

Have you seen “Nibbler”? (missing from 49th and Larchwood since July)

Posted on 25 September 2012 by WPL

Update: Nibbler is still missing. Here’s more information directly from the cat’s owner:

“Nibbler has been missing from 49th & Larchwood since July. Numerous reports of possible Nibbler sightings range from 50th to 46th, and from Baltimore Ave to Pine St. Nibbler is a male, and was about 22 lbs when he went missing so this is pretty big cat. He had a collar and tag when last seen, but that may have slipped off. He has black spots on his back, a black tail, and white underbelly. His humans miss him very, very much and believe he is still wandering around West Philly. If you think you have seen him please let us know. Nibbler is micro-chipped.”

Please call Doug at 215 909 2334 if you’ve seen Nibbler.
