The Cobbs Creek Parkway Guide Rail Improvement Project has begun, according to an announcement by the Streets Department, and motorists are advised to allow extra time when traveling along and through the work area. Temporary “No Parking” signs will also be posted in advance of each scheduled activity.
Day work hours will consist of temporary roadway shoulder and parking lane closures during off-peak between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m., within the work area, from the north side of Woodland Avenue to the south side of Springfield Avenue. Night work from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. will also involve the use of temporary roadway shoulder and parking lane closures. Through travel lanes will remain fully open to traffic throughout the project. In the wake of the tragic death of 25-year-old Avante Reynolds, a pedestrian killed on Cobbs Creek Parkway last month, and the demand for changes from the community, PennDOT and the city’s Streets Department have agreed to carry out safety improvements on the Parkway. The decision was announced today during a meeting with elected officials from West Philadelphia that included State Sen. Anthony Williams, State Rep. Joanna McClinton, and City Councilmember Jamie Gauthier.
PennDOT will begin installing multiple improvements within the next month, including rumble strips along the center lanes along the Parkway from Girard Avenue to Baltimore Avenue. A new style of rumble strip technology will be used which minimizes noise and nuisance to neighboring residents. Continue Reading

The Cobbs Creek Community Association and 5th Square have launched a petition demanding a safer Cobbs Creek Parkway, one of the city’s deadliest roadways. The petition is addressed to PennDOT and the Philadelphia Streets Department and demands immediate action to make this road safe for all its users. Continue Reading

The Streets Department has scheduled maintenance work on Cobbs Creek Parkway, which will result in its temporary closure from Wednesday, Aug. 8 through Thursday, Aug. 9.
Cobbs Creek Parkway, between 67th Street and Springfield Avenue/60th Street, will be closed to all traffic from 9 p.m. on Wednesday until 5 a.m. on Thursday. The following temporary restrictions are scheduled to be in effect:
Northbound traffic will be stopped at 67th Street. Vehicles can continue north using 67th Street to Chester Avenue, then 63rd Street to Woodland Avenue. Traffic that wishes to return to Cobbs Creek Parkway can do so at 58th Street. Southbound traffic will be stopped at Springfield Avenue. Vehicles can continue south using 60th Street and then turning right onto Woodland Avenue.
This closure is part of a larger project that will include multiple overnight closures over the course of August and early September. Advance notification will be provided for each separate closure.

Improvements are coming to the Cobbs Creek Parkway, which has been identified as problematic due to its speeding traffic, complex intersections, and high rates of pedestrian and vehicular crashes. Residents are invited to learn more about the planned improvements at a community meeting, which will take place on Wednesday, Dec. 13, at the Police Department’s 12th District Headquarters at 65th and Woodland.
