Coffee shop near 45th and Pine has new ownership and name – Knockbox Cafe

Posted on 21 July 2020 by WPL

The popular local coffee shop located on S. 45th Street between Pine and Osage has changed its name a few times in its history – from Sam’s Place to Earth Cup to Coffee Market, then back to Earth Cup a couple of years ago. Now it has a new owner and new name: Knockbox Cafe.

The new owner, Heather DeGrands, lives just two blocks away from the shop and is very excited about this new endeavor. She closed the deal to buy the café on June 1.

“I have been living in West Philly for over 12 years so I am familiar with many of the neighbors and customer base,” DeGrands wrote in an email.  Continue Reading

Three siblings want to bring the Ethiopian coffee experience to Baltimore Ave

Posted on 13 February 2020 by Mike Lyons

Three siblings hope to open an Ethiopian coffee shop on the southwest corner of 42nd and Baltimore.

The trio, whose family is from Ethiopia, presented their plan to the Spruce Hill Community Association zoning committee on Monday. The proposal requires a special exception to put a coffee shop in the vacant storefront at 500 S. 42nd Street.

“Our goal is to really showcase our heritage,” said Tigist Hailu, who will open the shop along with her brothers. “One thing we feel is really missing in the neighborhood is the Ethiopian coffee ceremony.”

The proposal will go to the Zoning Board of Adjustment in April and, if approved, interior innovations will begin shortly after.

Jezabel’s Studio, the Argentinian cafe and tea house that opened last year in a cozy space on 45th near Walnut, has recently expanded into the space next door (it’s now at 206-208 S. 45th). The new space allowed the cafe to double its seating capacity, and now it will be able to accommodate more customers as well as private parties and special events.

Since its expansion last month, the cafe has also extended its weekend hours – now 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. – and began serving breakfast featuring traditional Argentinian dishes, like medialunas, Mafaldas (ham and cheese medialunas) and tortilla de patatasContinue Reading

ReAnimator Coffee expected to open in Garden Court by end of March

Posted on 16 February 2018 by WestPhillyLocal.com

Here’s a little update on ReAnimator Coffee‘s West Philly location, which is in the works in Garden Court Plaza on the 4700 block of Pine Street. The popular Kensington/Fishtown coffee shop was expected to open its West Philly location in mid-November, according to the owners, but the new space renovation somehow stalled at the end of last year, and still hasn’t finished.

The good news is that the new shop set up seems to have sped up in the last few weeks. We saw a counter and other furniture finally being installed earlier this month. So, according to a worker, the shop is now expected to open by the end of March. We’ll keep you posted.
