This one didn’t end so well for the robber.

A 25-year-old woman was robbed at gunpoint early Thursday morning on the way to her apartment near Florence Ave and St. Bernard St., but thanks to the brave actions of another young woman, who was walking her dog nearby and who chased down the robber, the victim’s belongings were retrieved.

The incident happened around 2 a.m., according to police. The 25-year-old parked her car on the 800 block of St. Bernard and was walking to her apartment and talking on her cell phone when she heard someone behind her say something. She turned and saw a man in his 30’s standing behind her holding a black gun in his hand. The woman dropped her handbag and began screaming loudly. The man picked up her bag and ran south on St. Bernard. The bag contained several textbooks, police said.

A 24-year-old woman was walking her dog in the area of Florence and St. Bernard when she heard loud screams, police said. She ran towards the screaming and saw a male running south with a bag. The woman gave chase, with her dog leading the way, onto Warrington Ave and found the robber attempting to scale a high fence in a rear yard with the gun still in his hand. The man turned and saw the woman and waved the gun in her direction. He then ran past her west on Warrington and south on 50th Street. The woman recovered the stolen bag and returned it to the owner. No injuries were reported.

Some West Philly Local readers who live in that area heard loud screams by a woman and wrote us to report them and police presence shortly afterwords.

A caveat here: While this one ended well for the victim and the chaser, police obviously do not recommend confrontations with armed robbers.

The University City District (UCD) and the Philadelphia Police Department (PPD) received an award from the MetLife Foundation this week for their “extraordinary partnership to improve community safety.” The $20,000 award was presented on Monday at the UCD office at 39th and Chestnut by MetLife Managing Director David Fleisher.

The UCD-Philadelphia Police partnership was selected from more than 540 applicants nationwide for a MetLife Foundation Community-Police Partnership Award, a program administered by the Local Initiatives Support Corporation (LISC). This is the second time the partners are being honored by MetLife Foundation and LISC. In 2004, UCD and the PPD were recognized for their successful revitalization and safety work for the Baltimore Avenue Commercial Corridor Initiative.

“UCD recently completed a 15-year analysis of crime trends in the neighborhood, and determined that—while serious crime in the entire city has fallen by more than 20% since 1998—serious crime in University City has been cut in half over that same time period…This stands as a testament to the incredible partnership between the Philadelphia Police Department and UCD, as well as the major investment in policing and public safety by Penn, Drexel and many other University City institutions,” said UCD executive director Matt Bergheiser.

At least five gunpoint robberies took place in the area between Locust Street and Baltimore Avenue and 46th and 50th Streets over the weekend and police are looking for the suspects, according to tweets by Joe Murray of the Southwest Police Detectives.

The robberies happened on the 4700 block of Hazel Ave (on Friday around 8:30 p.m.), 4900 block of Locust St (on Friday, around 9 p.m.), 4800 block of Osage Ave (on Saturday, around 9:20 p.m.), 4600 block of Baltimore Ave (on Saturday, around 10 p.m.), and 4800 block of Larchwood Ave (on Sunday, around 6:10 p.m.), according to the Crime Reports map. There was also a robbery on the 4600 block of Locust St on Saturday at about 8:40 p.m. (see map image), but it’s not clear whether a gun was involved.

There are no more details available at this time. We’ll post more information when we have it.

Police are looking for a driver of a black SUV who hit a 3-year-old boy Friday night at 53rd and Chestnut, CBS Philly is reporting.

The hit-and-run accident happened at about 10:30 p.m. Police say that the boy’s mother was getting out of her car when her son darted out of it and was hit by an unknown vehicle. The child was in critical condition but has since been upgraded to stable. Police are checking nearby surveillance cameras. Anyone with information should call police at 215-686-TIPS.

Use Twitter? Then you know Detective Joseph Murray of the Southwest Detectives Division (or at least you should).

Det. Murray, known around West Philly as “The Tweeting Cop,” began using message boards in 2006 as a way to connect with the community he serves. That social media engagement evolved into Twitter three years later, when the 33-year-old detective opened an account under the (retired) handle, @TheFuzz9143. Now tweeting under @PPDJoeMurray, Det. Murray updates West Philadelphians about crime, missing (and sometimes then found) pets, and even his favorite Pearl Jam album—while also opening the digital floor for tips and feedback—on a near-daily basis.

But Det. Murray’s community involvement doesn’t stop with the computer screen. Well aware that his position with the Philadelphia Police Department (PPD) is considered a “desk job,” the third generation police officer makes a concerted effort to also have a physical presence, whether it’s through cruising West Philly in his car, buying coffee at Green Line or Rival Brothers, popping into a few local businesses for a quick hello, or checking up on old complaints he’s received. “It’s up to me to engage people so I try to do my best,” Murray, who was promoted to detective in 2005 at 25-years-old, wrote to West Philly Local in an email.

And his efforts are noticed by the city at large. This September, Det. Murray, along with 52 other emergency responders (including Southwest colleague Lt. John Walker), received an Award of Valor from the National Liberty Museum for his valiant work nearly 14 years on the force—which includes closing the 2011 triple shooting at Lorena’s Grocery Store on the 800 block of North 50^th Street. The shooting, which resulted in the deaths of siblings Porfirio and Lina Nunez, and Porfirio’s wife Carmen—employees of Lorena’s Grocery Store—is one of Murray’s recent cases that he finds most heartbreaking among the “far too many.”

“A family from the Dominican Republic was assassinated for no reason. A robbery with nothing taken,” Det. Murray wrote to West Philly Local. “That gets my blood pressure up even typing it now. There was satisfaction when we caught the killers but that does not bring the family back.”

For Det. Murray, the cases that “help everyone involved”, though, balance the distressing ones like the 2011 triple murder. And he’s especially encouraged when he never sees a person he’s booked or their name again. “I have come across thousands of people as a detective. A lot of times I see them a few years down the line working in a restaurant or at a store. That makes you feel good to see,” he wrote.

West Philly Local had a chance to chat with Det. Murray about being honored by the National Liberty Museum, his love for West Philly, the importance of engaging the community, and—of course—donuts.

UPDATE: Yesterday, the University City District released a crime alert warning residents about airbag thefts. The report states that airbag theft is on the rise in University City, with 45 break-ins in the last month alone.

Earlier report (Friday, Oct. 11): A reader who lives near Melville and Locust streets reports that his car was broken into at about 7:30 p.m. last night and his driver’s side airbag was stolen. A string of airbag thefts took place in that area over the summer, according to police.

Airbag thefts in the city continue to be a problem, police said, adding that there are more than a dozen open cases in the Spruce Hill area alone. Hondas seem to be a particular target, police said, a sentiment that is echoed in this ABC6 report on a rash of airbag thefts in Center City in March.

Sometimes a steering wheel locking device, like a Club, will make the airbag harder to get to and deter thieves. Some new, beefed-up steering wheel locks also include devices that protect the airbag. Airbags can cost as much as $1,000 to replace and some unscrupulous repair shops will use stolen bags and charge for new ones.
