Adopt-a-Dog: Chili

Posted on 08 February 2013 by WPL

chiliChili is one of the ACCT shelter pups that have a cold and need a warm couch to recover. She is an extremely sweet middle aged gal looking for a new forever home. She came to the shelter as a stray so now she’s ready to hop into your home and love you forever!

Chili also has an adorable and awesome personality. She’s about five-six years old so she’s the perfect age for you if you are looking for a chilled out middle aged dog who wants nothing more than love and affection. She is full of personality and she always has a smile on her face. She is very well behaved and she is happy to do whatever you are doing, she’s just a go with the flow type of dog.

She’s easy to handle and she walks well on the leash. She is a dog who will be happy to go on a walk with you, go out to lunch with you, play with toys by your feet, or curl up in your lap. She really loves making new friends, especially people friends.

You might chuckle at her because she has a sausage-like body and a small head but it’s what makes her adorable! She could stand to get in better shape but it’s nothing a proper diet and some walks won’t fix! Chili loves her treats and also really loves to play fetch with a tennis ball and she doesn’t mind it when you take it from her to throw again. She did well with the dogs she has met so far at the shelter, especially ones who are chill and mellow like her.

Chili is a fun girl to be around and she can’t help but make everyone around her smile, so bring her home and she’ll make you smile every day. If you want to find out more information about this dog or if you would like to meet her you can email her two friends who hang out with her a lot at: Always8bball@aol.com or Anastasiam1981@yahoo.com.

A Cairn Terrier Mix looking for home

Posted on 10 January 2013 by WPL

Bug face looking up

This sweet, 8-9-month-old Cairn Terrier Mix followed a neighbor, Lena, home from Malcolm X Park about a month ago and since then has been living with her. Lena hopes to find a good home for him. He weighs about 30 pounds. He loves people and has lots of energy, so will do best in a home where someone is home most of the day to keep him company.

He is good with kids and other dogs and okay with cats but needs close watching as he likes to chase them. He has all shots and was scheduled for neutering Jan. 9. He has lots of puppy energy and loves to play and cuddle.

If interested please call Lena at 215-704-9913.

Adopt-a-Dog: Brutus

Posted on 04 January 2013 by WPL

brutusBrutus is an adult male pit bull mix weighing 34 pounds. He was found as a stray and it is quite obvious that he must have been on his own for a while as he is too skinny and suffers from a bit of hair loss. The rough streets of Philly however have not changed Brutus’ sweet nature. He is a really cool dude who likes to hang out by your side, sniff his surroundings and check out everything that is going on. He also likes to play from time to time and but is more focused on his human friends. While he is not particularly clingy, Brutus always looks to you when you have him out, seeks eye contact and stays close by your side. And he obviously enjoys getting his ear scratched.

It’s hard to tell whether he was trained to walk nicely on a leash at some point in his life but it’s super easy to handle him. Even when he starts to pull, he picks up quickly when you let him know that he needs to walk slower. Brutus met a couple of dogs while at the shelter and did well during his meets. So far, his life on the streets was lonely, and while at the shelter he at least has a roof over his head and two meals a day, he is looking for a home where he can get lots of love and give you even more love in return.

So what are you waiting for? Come meet Brutus beefcake today! Please make sure to have your landlord’s permission to own a dog like Brutus when you come to meet him. Also, please bring your family and resident dogs with you so we can make sure he is a good match for everyone.
If you cannot adopt Brutus but would like to help him find his forever family, fostering is a great option! You save not only Brutus but also another dog who can move into his cage at the shelter.

Brutus lives at:

Animal Care & Control Team (ACCT)
111 W. Hunting Park Avenue in Philadelphia

Adoption hours are Mon-Fri 1-8 pm and Sat-Sun 10am-5pm — year round — 365!

Foster hours are 9-6 pm every day.

Adopt-a-Dog: Beatrix & Murphy. Adoption specials this weekend!

Posted on 13 December 2012 by WPL

BeatrixSweet, loveable Beatrix is in search of a forever home – not just for the holidays! She’s a 1-2 year old playful pretty girl! She loves playing tug and fetch! She also loooooves people! When she sees a new person she gets the butt wiggles! She’s a young girl so she still has some of her puppy ways! She’s actually named after Beatrix Potter because she hops and bounces and spins just like a bunny rabbit!

Beatrix is really good about sharing her toys. She’s kind of scared of other dogs though. She does well with really young puppies and her brother – she came in the shelter with her brother. His name is Cleveland and he’s awesome too, just like Beatrix.

Bea is up-to-date on all of her shots and will be spayed and microchipped when you take her home. Awesome, right? She has two special people dedicated to keeping her happy in the shelter. You can contact them by sending an email to: todorov.lulu@gmail.com. Come meet her soon and bring everyone in your family (dogs included) to make sure she is a good fit for everybody!

Murphy3You love chocolate, right? Then you’ll love Murphy! He’s a young, handsome fella with a beautiful dark red brown coat. Murphy is trying to get out of the shelter and into a loving, caring home for the holidays.

Murphy loves to say hello to everyone and is very friendly. He loves to walk on a harness and will barely pull you which make the walks much more pleasant. He loves a game of fetch with a tennis ball and is learning “Drop it” very quickly.

He weighs in at only 50 lbs and is a medium-sized dude. And the best yet: he is housetrained too! He is also up-to-date on all of his shots and will be microchipped and neutered before he comes home with you.

Send an email to todorov.lulu@gmail.com with any additional questions or come on down to the shelter and meet him. You will not be disappointed once you see this handsome mug in person!

“Baby” needs a home

Posted on 11 September 2012 by WPL

Last month neighbor Robin and her husband found this sweet, handsome pit bull near Clark Park. They took him in, hoping to find his home, but none was found. Rather than taking him to ACCT they chose to foster, got him fixed, vaccinated, microchipped, and want to find him the best possible home.

“Baby” (his current name) is considered to be about 7 months old, weighs about 60 lbs, gets along great with Robin’s two little dogs, kids, other dogs, and strangers. He just wants to be everybody’s best friend! Local dog walkers who have met Baby agree that he would make an awesome best friend. He is still young, so he does LOVE and need attention!

Anyone wanting to meet Baby can email Robin at robinstur42@yahoo.com or call 215-526-8645.

Adopt-a-Dog: Birdie

Posted on 30 August 2012 by WPL

LadyBird is a medium sized, 40-pound, 2-year-old, rust and white colored Staffie Mix. Poor Birdie hasn’t had much attention given to her during her short life – she was found as a stray, but she’s getting plenty of attention now. Since she’s become a member of the Pen Pals at ACCT, her behavior has improved immensely.

She has learned to walk on a leash with an Easy-Walk harness, she has mastered ‘sit’ and does pretty well with ‘down,’ picked up ‘touch’ like a champ and is now working on recall! Birdie is a very friendly girl, but can be excessive in her play style. With the right kind of dog, she’ll play and play and play! There isn’t a dog she’s met that she’s hasn’t liked. She’s even worked her way up to shared housing in the shelter. She’s paired with another dog in the kennels, they share two spaces where they keep one another company – which is working wonders with the dogs at keeping their stress-levels down.

LadyBird is very treat-motivated, and training her has gone pretty well, but she needs consistency, discipline and boundaries. Because she’s so pushy in her play style, please bring in your dogs to make sure that your dogs can tolerate her. Should Birdie go to a home where there are children under the age of eight, close supervision should occur around the children; her inconsistent manners and pushy style may be too much for a small child.

LadyBird is part of the Pen Pal program. She has a volunteer dedicated to finding her a great home or foster. Her pen pal also spends quality time with LadyBird trying to keep her as stress free as possible while living at the shelter. LadyBird’s pen pal also works on teaching her to be the best dog she can. If you have any questions about Birdie, contact her pen pal at katherine.ACCT@gmail.com.

Check her out in action with her buddy Johnny (just adopted) here.
