Adopt-a-Dog: Leo

Posted on 02 May 2012 by WPL

West Philly resident Tonia is looking for a new home for her dog Leo. Leo is an 11-month-old Lab/Pit mix. He is an amazing dog but Tonia no longer has time and attention he needs due to some changes in her life. He is dog and kid-friendly and loves to play and run.

Leo gets along well with Tonia’s daughter as well as her cat. He loves the outdoors. He has had his first set of shots but is not neutered. Tonia said that she really doesn’t want to let him go but he cannot enjoy his life under the limitations in time she now has.

If you are interested in adopting Leo, or want to meet him, please email Tonia at: toniarenae7536@gmail.com

Adopt-a-Dog: Rex

Posted on 19 April 2012 by WPL

Meet Rex, an adorable Staffie/Terrier mix. Poor Rex’s owner was deployed and had no one to take care of this energetic boy. Rex is only 6-12 months old, energetic, active and super friendly. He is a very good boy in his kennel at the shelter but instantly perks up once outside.

He is big and strong and does need some leash and general manners. He did very well in his dog meets and even ignored a dog who was not being very nice to Rex during their meet. He is very playful, loves fetch and toys. He may be a big boy but he’s still very much puppy at heart with typical puppy behaviors.

He showed no interest in cats during cat test but can be re-tested upon a request. Are you looking for your new best bud? Rex will definitely steal your heart! More photos of Rex can be found here.

This dog is located at 111 West Hunting Park Ave in Philadelphia and is available for adoption or foster care (dog meet dog required; kids under 13 must meet and no kids under 6). Adoption hours are 1-8 Monday through Friday and 10-5 on weekends. If you are interested in foster care, the hours are 9-6 seven days per week. For more information about ACCT please visit www.acctphilly.org or go directly to the shelter.

The Clark Park bowl will go to the dogs this Sunday with the second annual Lug-Nuts Weight Pull and a day of protective pooch maintenance.

Low-cost vaccines and microchipping ($20-25) will be available at the park from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. The event, sponsored by P.A.W.S. Philadelphia and the Penn Vet Animal Welfare Society, will also include advice and deals on spay and neutering.

The highlight of the day is the weight pull, which kicks off at 1 p.m. No prior training is required to enter. No registration is required either. Just a willingness to strap on a harness. Everything from poodles to pit bulls to pomeranians are welcome to give the pull a try. Entrants receive free dog food. Free dog training and gifts will also be available.

This lovable pooch needs a new home

Posted on 09 February 2011 by Mike Lyons

Neighborhood resident Katie Bonier has temporary custody of a spayed female shepherd mix named Missy. She relays the story below:

dog

I found her wandering around Chester and 46th on Saturday, she had a  tag with her name and address. Through interviewing neighbors and a web search I found that a young woman named Vanessa has owned her since birth, had two dogs, fell on hard times and had to move away 3 weeks ago, to an apartment where dogs aren’t allowed. She left Missy with her parents on 50th and  Kingsessing a few weeks ago asking them to find someone to adopt her. The parents kept her in the yard, and she escaped. I talked to Vanessa, and she needs help finding a home for Missy.

I’ve got an elderly 100 lb dog. I  don’t want a second dog as Lula goes into old age. Lula has been tolerant because Missy is polite and submissive, but she clearly doesn’t want another dog in the house. Missy weighs about 40 lbs, spayed female shepherd mix. Seems well-trained, not familiar with dog cookies or human food, sits, comes, behaves well  with other dogs. Seems trusting and even-tempered, and like maybe she’s used to being left places. She seems quite happy with everyone she meets.

Thanks!

Katie

Chester Avenue dog park reopens for membership

Posted on 12 January 2011 by Mike Lyons

We’re a little late on this but… the Chester Avenue Dog Park, the private dog park at 48th and Chester, is taking membership applications again. The park had been full and closed to new members for several months. Starting in November the park will open 10 spots every two months. The November/December and January/February spots have been filled. There are still slots for March/April, but Christina Bach from the dog park said those are filling up fast.

For more information go to the park website.
