Convention Watch Party tomorrow at Reed’s Coffee

Reed’s Coffee and Tea House at 38th and Lancaster is hosting a Democratic Convention Watch Party tomorrow, from 6 to 9 p.m. and all neighbors are invited. President Barack Obama is expected to accept the party’s nomination tomorrow evening. For more information and to RSVP, click here.

Huge Sidewalk Sale in Powelton Village this Saturday

Thanks to our reader Tony D. for this info: The 32nd Annual Hamilton Street Porch Sale, a four-block long sidewalk sale, will be held in Powelton Village this Saturday (Sept. 8). The sale began as a small yard sale and has grown over the years to a four-block long sale with over 100 vendors, a mix of long time residents and local vendors.

There will be a wide variety of items for sale, including: housewares, bookcases, furniture, pottery, clothes, family treasures, books, antiques, plants, food, jewelry, musical instruments, electronics, and more.

The sale will take place all along Hamilton Street from 34th Street to 38th Street from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. (rain date: Sunday, Sept. 9).

Labor Day Plant Swap at Chester Avenue Garden. Update: Rescheduled for Saturday

Update: The event has been rescheduled for Saturday, Sept. 8 due to rain.

Chester Avenue Community Garden (4715 Chester Ave) is hosting a plant/seed swap, bake sale, and an overwintering workshop from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Community members are invited to participate. This is a fundraising event for a new front gate and kiwi tree supports. Here’s what you can bring to trade at the plant swap:

-Winter hardy vegetable starts
-Fast-growing cold season seeds
-Heirloom garlic
-Berry bushes
-Perennials including flowers and bulbs

You can also purchase plants available for sale at the garden. Suggested entry donation for this event is $5. For more information visit the event’s Facebook page.

Benefit Gala to fund Curio Theatre’s second stage

Curio Theatre is hosting a Benefit Gala and an auction to raise funds for Curio’s new, second stage located in the basement of the Calvary Center. The event will take place on Saturday, Sept. 15 at St. Francis DeSales (47th and Springfield) and will include a live and a silent auction, an open beer and wine bar, a meal catered by The Gold Standard Cafe, and live jazz music from Dr. Ketchup. Tickets are $50 (adults), $45 (students/seniors), $90 (couple), $450 (table/10 tickets). If you would like to donate an item to the auction, please call (215) 525-1350.

Hands For Peace Across Southwest event tomorrow

Community members will join hands tomorrow morning along Woodland Avenue, from 52nd to 70th Streets in an effort to promote peace in Southwest Philadelphia. The Hands For Peace Across Southwest event will take place from 8 to 11 a.m. and the sign-up will begin at 7:30 a.m. at NUAD office at 5214 Woodland Avenue. This is an opportunity to show your support for change, peace and quality of life in Southwest Philly.

Hands For Peace Across Southwest is an initiative by Paul (Earthquake) Moore, who has been a community activist in Southwest Philadelphia for more than 25 years. His passion has always been to create strategies to help save the community.

Lorraine Ballad Morrill from Power 99FM will cover the event. Everyone is invited to come out and be a part of this history making event.
