The Drexel University Psychology Department is holding a Drexel Brain Awareness Week and is inviting local residents to a series of fun and educational events aimed at spreading awareness about brain-related topics, including maintaining cognitive health and the portrayal of the brain on the big screen. These events are free and open to the public.

Free Screening of “Limitless” and “Inside Out”

Everyone is invited for a FREE screening of the movie “Limitless” on Friday, March 11, and “Inside Out” on Tuesday, March 15. Each screening starts at 7 p.m. and will be followed by an audience Q&A with experts in psychology and related fields. The movies will be screened at Drexel University’s Stratton Hall, Room 113, 3201 Chestnut St.

Brain Food at the Dornsife Center

Join the Drexel Department of Psychology on Thursday, March 17 for Brain Food, a community-wide event that aims to increase awareness about maintaining cognitive health and fitness throughout the lifespan. Multiple interactive displays, manned by Drexel University faculty and students, will be open to visitors to learn about different aspects of cognitive health (i.e., healthy food alternatives, the importance of a good night’s sleep, etc.).

Kids and teenagers will have the opportunity to engage in fun, interactive activities (games, arts and crafts, brain model presentations, etc.) that will help them learn about the general structure and function of areas of the brain. Brain-healthy food and refreshments will be served. The event will be held at the Dornsife Center’s Ryan Hall (3509 Spring Garden St), starting at 5:30 p.m.

Shakespeare in Clark Park (SCP), the immensely popular annual outdoor theater event, will return in July to the park’s “Bowl” near 45th and Chester. The company recently announced its new production for the Summer 2016 season and provided some other interesting details. The Two Gentlemen of Verona, Shakespeare’s classic romantic comedy, is set to run July 27 – 31 and will bring together Philadelphia’s finest actors.

The show is directed by Kathryn MacMillan, a Philadelphia-based theater director who has earned a reputation for directing classical and contemporary works with freshness and clarity and shaping great acting ensembles. She has directed over 25 productions in the Philadelphia area and is currently working on the development of a world premiere musical.  Continue Reading

Here is a chance to see John Edgar Wideman, a widely celebrated writer and winner of several literary awards, including the International PEN/Faulkner award, this Friday in West Philly. Wideman, who is also a founder of Penn’s African American Studies Department, will speak at the West Philadelphia branch of Mighty Writers (3861 Lancaster Ave.).

The event starts at 6:30 p.m. and is free and open to the public.

Mighty Writers is a local non-profit organization that teaches children to think and write with clarity. Mighty Writers West opened its doors in 2013 and since then has been offering classes, afterschool programs, College Prep courses, and a summer camp to West Philadelphia kids and youth. This year on the Chinese calendar is the year of the Monkey. It starts on February 8, and there will be celebrations around the city this weekend and on Monday.

Families are invited to the following events:

• International House Philadelphia (3701 Chestnut St.) is hosting a celebration tonight (Friday, Feb. 5), beginning at 7 p.m. There will be traditional musical and dance performances and a sampling of delicious traditional Chinese cuisine. The program includes:

7:00 p.m. – Traditional food tasting and vendors in Galleria
7:45 p.m. – Show featuring traditional dance, song, lion dance, and more begins in Ibrahim Theater

If you’re looking for something interesting to do tonight, check out this special exhibition opening at University City Arts League (UCAL). An emerging young artist, Patrick Maguire, has totally transformed the gallery space at 4226 Spruce St. The exhibition includes an amazing structure in the middle of the gallery, paintings on the walls, and ambient sound installation.

“Without ruining the experience it will be difficult to tell you much except that even the walls and doors of the space will be entirely different, almost disorienting–in the best possible sense of the word,” UCAL director Annette Monnier wrote in an email.

The opening reception for Maguire’s “We’re on a Road to Nowhere” exhibition is tonight from 6-10 p.m. You can also stop by any weekday from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. during the run of the exhibition (January 15th-February 12th).

Neighbors are invited to a fun and free community event this Friday (Jan. 15) in Cedar Park. Free Community Dinner/ Potluck Cabaret is hosted by Cedar Park Neighbors and will take place from 6-8 p.m. at People’s Baptist Church (5039 Baltimore Ave.).
