Here’s some exciting news for our little neighbors. Crossroads Music, located at Calvary Center (48th and Baltimore), is now offering free monthly music programs for kids under 12 and their parents/caregivers. The first program is on Saturday, Sept. 15 (see more info below). All programs begin at 6 p.m. and last 30-40 minutes. Seating is first come, first served.

Clark Park Youth Soccer, a non-competitive and family-friendly program, is looking for volunteer coaches to work with children between ages 5 and 11.
The Fall season begins on Saturday, September 22 and continues until November 17. Kids ages 5-7 practice and play at 10:30-Noon; kids ages 7-11 practice and play from Noon to 1:30. Each team has two to three coaches assigned (with a roster of subs).

Twelve bike racks will be installed in the sidewalks around Clark Park this Saturday and Sunday. A group of volunteers from the Friends of Clark Park will do the work. Please contact Doug Naphas (douglasnaphas@gmail.com) if you would like to help with the installation or if you can lend any of the following tools: a hammer drill, a portable generator, an impact driver, a Shop-Vac, extension cords, a caulk gun.
Registration is now open for the Fall 2012 season of Clark Park Youth Soccer League, a recreational, non-competitive soccer program. The program kicks off on Saturday, September 22 and kids ages 5 through 11 are welcome to register. Registration information and forms can be found on this page. - Saturday, July 21, 11:30-3 p.m., White Rock Baptist Church (5240 Chestnut St.) – Community Science Carnival
The First Annual Community Science Carnival is organized by the Science Education Academy, a community partnership between the White Rock Baptist Church and the Ernest E Just Biomedical Society at the University of Pennsylvania. Children from grades K-6 are invited to be Curious Scientific Investigators and assist Penn graduate students and Post-doctoral fellows with scientific experiments. Children will learn about microbes, how to make batteries with potatoes, how planes fly and how to solve mysteries using chemistry! Parents are welcome too – there will be a workshop on how to help your children with science fair projects. See the flyer for details. This is a free event and open to the public. - Saturday, noon-6 p.m., Saunders Park (39th & Powelton Ave.) – Lancaster Avenue Jazz and Community Arts Festival
Also this Saturday, don’t miss the Lancaster Avenue Jazz and Community Arts Festival taking place at Saunders Park in the Powelton Village section of West Philadelphia. Doc Gibbs & Friends, Glenn Bryan & Reference Point and Planet Jazz will perform. Also there will be free family activities, a moon bounce, crafts, a vendor market and more. We also hear that a shredder truck will make a stop at the park from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., so bring all that used paper cluttering your house and then enjoy some great music. - Sunday, July 22, 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m., The Rotunda (4014 Walnut Street) – Kripalu Yoga Preview Class
Kripalu Yoga classes begin at The Rotunda in August and a free preview class is being held this Sunday, from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Kripalu Yoga is a form of Hatha Yoga using standard yoga poses, inner focus, breathwork, meditation and relaxation. If your child is entering Philadelphia School District Kindergarten this fall and needs some extra help getting ready for the first day of school, here’s a program that can help. Lucien E. Blackwell Regional Library (52nd & Sansom) is hosting Ready, Set, Kindergarten, an interactive program for parents and children, tomorrow, June 26, from 6 – 7:30 p.m. Families will play educational games and will learn about important skills for Kindergarten. Families will also leave with fun, educational giveaways.
Ready, Set, Kindergarten is a new initiative started in partnership with The School District of Philadelphia, LEARN, The Free Library of Philadelphia and Please Touch Museum.

Ann Schwartz, a musician skilled in a wide range of instruments and with over 15 years of music teaching experience, is launching The Green Tambourine, a new series of interactive music programs for kids ages 0 to 10 years at The Rotunda (40th & Walnut). The programs include musical playgroups for babies and little kids and group instrumental lessons for older children. Musical playgroups are divided into the following age groups: birth-9 months, 2 & 3 year olds, 4 & 5 year olds, and Toddler Class (10-23 months). The first 6-week session includes one class per week every Friday kicks off on June 22.
The Green Tambourine also offers group violin and guitar lessons for kids ages 6-10 beginning in September. The lessons are taught once a week on Thursdays and are also offered in 6-week sessions. Participants will need to bring their own instrument.
