All are welcome to one of West Philadelphia’s oldest community traditions – the Spruce Hill May Fair in Clark Park. It will take place on Saturday, May 11, 12-6 p.m. at 43rd and Chester.

As always, this free, family-friendly frolic features live entertainment, food trucks, children’s games (including the wildly popular petting zoo) and scores of vendors and community service information tables.

The event is organized by the Spruce Hill Community Association (SHCA), which is inviting community groups and vendors to take part in the fair. Space is limited and priority will be given to local community organizations and artisans. SHCA will provide a 6-foot table, table covering and chair in a 10-foot space. Vendor fees are set affordably low: $40 or less for the day. No second-hand goods, commercial products or food table sales, please. The organizers will work around any threatening showers if at all possible and hold the event as planned. However, in the event of significant rain, SHCA may have to cancel the event on that morning. First Lay Principal for West Catholic Preparatory High School

James P. Gallagher

The Office of Catholic Education of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia (OCE) has recently announced the appointment of Mr. James P. Gallagher as Principal of West Catholic Preparatory High School in West Philadelphia effective July 1st. He is the first lay principal in the 98-year-old history of the school. Mr. Gallagher’s appointment follows the January 2015 announcement that Sister Mary Bur, IHM, will retire at the end of the 2014-2015 academic year after 21 years as principal and 27 total years of service to the school.

Mr. Gallagher holds his Masters of Education Degree in Curriculum, Instruction, Technology, and Education from Temple University. He has taught for several years at Lingelbach Elementary School for the School District of Philadelphia and most recently has worked as an Instructor of Teaching Social Studies in the Elementary Classroom at Saint Joseph’s University.  Continue Reading

UPDATE (3/11/2015): 8 Limbs Academy opened on March 3, 2015. Here’s a short update from Coach Kate:

“We are scheduling FREE intros but are booked all through March, and we are starting to fill April. We are offering early morning ALL female kickboxing at 6 a.m. and evening classes starting at 6 p.m. The children’s classes start at 4:15 p.m., and there is an after school program for them starting at 3:00 p.m. Here is a link to our schedule: www.8limbsacademy.com/8-limbs-current-schedule.”

Here’s some exciting news for local martial arts and fitness fans. Partners and coaches Charlie Cottone and Kate Allen are opening a Muay Thai Kickboxing school, 8 Limbs Academy, on Baltimore Avenue in March. For those who are not very familiar with kickboxing, Muay Thai or Thai boxing is a national sport of Thailand. It is a physical and mental discipline also known as “the art of eight limbs,” because eight points of contact are used in the combat: fists, elbows, knees, and shins.

Eight Limbs Academy is expected to open in the first week of March, and coaches Charlie and Kate have already started preregistering folks, kids and adults alike, for their programs, which include All Female Kickboxing, Adult Muay Thai, and Kids Muay Thai programs. They will also offer an after-school program for kids who can come and spend time in the gym after school, including doing their homework, before their Muay Thai lesson. Hey, have you heard the buzz? The fifth annual Philadelphia Honey Festival is this weekend and the national historic landmark Bartram’s Garden (54th and Lindbergh) is one of the venues. Bartram’s is excited to host the event again and invites everyone to celebrate bees and honey with them on Sunday, Sept. 7, 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.

Lots of fun and educational activities are planned: “Pollinator Defense Kitchen” with special guest artists from Mural Arts, “So You Want to be a Beekeeper?” presentation, Langstroth-style open hive demonstration, Be-A-Bee children’s parade and other kids’ activities. Also, there will be a plant sale and marketplace with local vendors, farm tour and farmers’ market. Kayak rentals will be offered by Hidden River Outfitters. Admission is free. Coinciding with Honey Festival, Bartram’s will also host a Bitters Cocktail Party on Sunday from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. Guests are invited to enjoy the Garden in all its late summer splendor and handcrafted Bartram’s Bitters cocktails created by celebrity bartender Katie Loeb. The bitters are a Philadelphia Distilling Company creation based on a historic Bartram family recipe and Katie Loeb is Philly’s own Cocktail Queen and “farm-to-bar” pioneer. Delicious pairings of local cheeses, fruit and honey will be provided by Fair Food. Local band Noggin Hill will perform bluegrass favorites. Tickets are $25 ($20 for Bartram’s Garden members; $30 at the door) and can be purchased here.

FYI, Bartram’s Garden has limited parking and the organizers recommend traveling to both of these events by bike or public transportation (#36 Trolley).

Seriously, you need to bee there. OK, sorry, we’ll see ourselves out.

Here’s something our little neighbors and their parents will enjoy doing again now that the section “A” of Clark Park has reopened. A traditional “Storytime at the Turtle” has returned and is taking place every Thursday at 7 p.m.

Stories and short books are read by volunteers from the Parent Infant Center (PIC). Snacks and refreshments are also available. So head down with your little ones tomorrow night to the turtle for this fun and educational activity.
