Hazardous Waste Drop-off event tomorrow

Posted on 18 May 2012 by WPL

wasteDon’t miss this chance to get rid of your old batteries, paints, glue, cleaners, moth balls and other hazardous stuff. The Streets Department is organizing a Household Hazardous Waste Drop-off event this Saturday, May 19, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the 1st District Highway Yard at 4800 Parkside Avenue (see the map below).

Not sure what qualifies for hazardous waste? Check product labels for any of these key words: TOXIC (pesticides, antifreeze, etc.), FLAMMABLE (gasoline, paint thinner), CORROSIVE (acids, drain cleaner), and REACTIVE (chlorine bleach, pool cleaner). NOTE: Oil-based paints are okay to bring, but Latex paint is not hazardous. Go to this page for the full list of hazardous materials accepted at this drop-off.

You can also bring your old computers and monitors because they contain potentially hazardous elements when disposed of in the trash.

Fire at 50th and Cedar

Posted on 07 May 2012 by WPL

We couldn’t find the residents of the house on the scene. If anyone knows them and they need help, please let us know and we’ll pass it along.

fire

8:15 p.m. We went to the scene. The fire is extinguished, but the top two floors appear to have been destroyed. It’s a duplex and the adjacent house at 5024 Cedar Ave. also sustained some damage.

7:23 p.m. A reader reports a fire at 5026 Cedar Avenue this evening. Stay tuned as we are trying to get more information on it.

Ramen Bar coming to 4040 Locust Street

Posted on 30 April 2012 by WPL

Ramen Bar may be coming soon to the building at 4040 Locust Street.

If you are a noodle lover, this news should make you happy. Ramen Bar may be coming to the former Locust Moon Comics space at 40th and Locust Streets soon if their liquor license application gets approved. The building at 4040 Locust Street, owned by 4040 Locust Street Partners, L.P., formerly also hosted Strike Bowling Lounge, and the Redcap’s Corner gaming shop. Keswick Cycle opened at this location last year.

Foobooz reports that an ad looking for a head chef for a ramen restaurant close to the University of Pennsylvania was posted online back in January. The opening date listed in the ad was May 2012 and it looks like it could be for this restaurant. Judging by the boards covering the building, the opening may be later than May. We’ll let you know as soon as there is more information available.

Route 34 Track Renewal Project to begin May 19

Posted on 30 April 2012 by WPL

SEPTA is planning a Trolley Route 34 Track Renewal Project in West Philadelphia this spring and summer, according to their Community Update distributed in the neighborhood. The project is scheduled between May 19 and September 1, 2012 and includes a pre-reconstruction and four reconstruction phases.

trolleyPre-reconstruction is scheduled for May 19-June 15 and includes rail welding in advance of construction. Rails will be welded and stored along Baltimore Avenue at four locations – between 41st and 42nd streets, between 50th and 51st streets, between 54th and 55th streets, and between 58th and 59th streets. Trolley service will not be affected during this phase, but parking will not be permitted in the area where rails are stored, with a few exceptions.

Phase I will take place from June 17 through July 7 and will include the reconstruction of both tracks between 40th and 42nd streets, beginning at 40th and progressing westward through completion of 42nd Street. During this phase, the entire two-block area on Baltimore Avenue will be closed.

Phase II is scheduled from July 1 through August 4 and includes the reconstruction of both tracks between 49th and 52nd streets. Phase III is scheduled from July 29 through August 18 and includes the reconstruction of both tracks between 54th and 55th streets. Phase IV includes the reconstruction of both tracks through the intersection of 58th Street and is scheduled from August 11 through September 1.

Throughout all phases, buses will replace trolley service from the 40th Street portal to the end of the line at the 61st Street Loop. All traffic, including buses, will be detoured around the active construction sites. All side streets in the affected construction areas will be closed to through traffic.

Some of the existing tracks were installed as far back as the early 1980s. The street structure supporting the tracks has deteriorated due to water leaks, traffic and the overall age of the street surface, which requires increased maintenance, SEPTA said. During the reconstruction, SEPTA will excavate, renew and pave approximately 7,500 track feet in both directions.

If you have any questions about this project, please call SEPTA Community Relations office at 215-580-7013.

Zoning news: Apple Lofts approved, liquor store denied – for now

Posted on 19 April 2012 by Mike Lyons

The Zoning Board of Adjustment (ZBA) recently acted on two disputed West Philly development proposals. The ZBA approved a developer’s proposal to turn the long-empty Apple Lofts Storage building at 780 S. 52nd St. into a 112-unit apartment complex. But it denied the proposal to convert the adult video store near 43rd and Chestnut into a state Wine and Spirits Shoppe.

The Apple Lofts project, which required a rezoning from industrial to residential, garnered wide support from many residents and businesses nearby. Dozens of letters in support of the project, proposed by Iron Stone Strategic Capital Partners, came into the ZBA. Those in favor included the Cedar Park Neighbors Association and community radio station WPEB. That support outweighed the opposition, which was orchestrated by the Community Achievement Association (CAA). The CAA, as the City Paper recently reported, is essentially one person – West Philly resident Shawn Kelly.

Kelly submitted a thick file of petitions and community meeting minutes to the ZBA. Concerns included an increase in surrounding residents’ property taxes and the environmental hazards, including the disruption of toxic soil at the site.

videoMeanwhile, the ZBA denied the proposal to convert Risque Video (pictured), the largest storefront in a strip mall at 43rd and Chestnut, into an “upscale” liquor store. Many West Philly residents supported the proposal because of the closing of a Wine and Spirits Shoppe at 4049 Market Street earlier this year. That closure has put considerable customer pressure on the remaining local shop near 49th and Baltimore.

The Spruce Hill Community Association last month tentatively supported the proposal with the stipulation that the 5,000-square-foot space be converted to an “upscale” store.

But many Muslim residents who live near the location oppose the proposal. The plaza also includes a halal restaurant and butcher shop. The Masjid al-Jamia mosque is a block away on 43rd and Walnut.

This is not the first time the ZBA has rejected a plan for a liquor store in the area. In 2007 the ZBA rejected an application for a liquor store near 43rd and Walnut – across the street from Masjid al-Jamia – after vocal opposition from Muslim residents.

But this one might not be over. The ZBA is currently reconsidering the denial after an appeal.
