Cat found near 43rd & Larchwood

Posted on 31 December 2011 by WPL

One of our readers emailed us earlier today with this information:

“This guy is hanging out on my back steps at 4301 Larchwood. Purple collar but no tag. It’s in an enclosed back hard, but the back gate is open. He/she may not be lost, but I’ve never seen it before, and it’s not motivated to go anywhere.”

If this is your cat please email to: claireiltis[at]gmail.com

Another cat rescued in Clark Park

Posted on 27 December 2011 by WPL

Landscapers try to save the cat stuck in the tree.

A few weeks ago we wrote about an amazing rescue of a starved cat (since named “Clark Kent” in honor of where he was found and his heroic survival) in Clark Park by one of our neighbors. Today we learned that another cat was abandoned in the park and this time it took a group effort to save him.

Reportedly the cat was taken to the park by some women and dumped there yesterday morning. The neighbors who saw that tried to plea with the women to take the cat back. It didn’t work. The poor animal was very frightened and climbed atop one of the tallest trees in the park, where he stayed all day yesterday and all night, crying.

This morning some neighbors observed the scene when a landscaping worker put a ladder on top of his truck and was trying to reach the cat, while the University Of Sciences security and other neighbors gathered around and cheered loudly for this effort. Some folks held blankets to catch the cat in case of a fall.

Fortunately, everything ended well. The worker was able to grab the cat who later was taken to South Philly for foster care. The woman who temporarily adopted the rescued feline came here after she learned about it from a City Kitties Facebook announcement.

Note: We’d like to thank Valerie Ross, Naomi Segal, Barry Grossbach, and Linda Lee for reporting this story on the UCNeighbors listserv.

Adopt-a-Dog: Candy

Posted on 14 December 2011 by WPL

This week’s adoptable dog is Candy who badly needs a home for Christmas. She is just a pup around 45 lbs. and already spayed thanks to her former friends. She is a terrier/pit bull mix, but please don’t hold it against her if you were looking for something else. You will find her to be a very patient companion.

You can teach Candy anything you want with a treat in hand, but she sometimes gets distracted when other dogs are around. She’s still learning how to socialize and may be a little pushy when it comes to play. She also doesn’t like to play with cats, but she will get along with you and all of your friends.

Candy is part of the ACCT Pen Pal Program. She has a volunteer dedicated to helping her find her a home. The volunteer spends time with her on a regular basis, teaches her the basics of being a great dog and helps her stay happy while living at the shelter. She can also provide post-adoption support!

If you are interested in meeting Candy, please email her Pen Pal at: darcy.wilkins [at] gmail.com. For more information on how to adopt/foster Pen Pal dogs go here.

Adopt-a-Dog: Brandy

Posted on 07 December 2011 by WPL

This week’s dog is Brandy – a beautiful, smart, and playful brunette pit bull mix.

Brandy has the kinds of things that you want in a dog, the complete package! She has a huge, beautiful smile that she’ll show you just about any time you pet her, and her pen pal at the shelter has been teaching her some commands.

She already knows “sit” and “down,” and she’s even learning “roll over.” Basically, she’ll learn pretty much anything if there are treats involved!

It doesn’t take much to keep this dog happy. She has a lot of energy since she’s still in her prime, so she loves to play and run, but once she’s worn out she is content to plop down next to you (or on your lap if you’re okay with that) and relax. Brandy also loves belly rubs.

Please come and meet this dog and take her home with you. She wants a new home with people who will love her as much as she’ll love them (a lot!). If you have any other dogs (or cats) in your home, bring them with you to meet Brandy to see if they’d get along.

Please email Brandy’s pen pal Sarah for more information or if you want to meet Brandy: cortes.sarah [at] gmail.com

Found kitten (on 46th between Osage and Baltimore)

Posted on 04 December 2011 by WPL

Reader Jeff says that he found a small tabico kitten (pictured) this afternoon on 46th St between Osage and Baltimore. He believes that it’s a girl.

“She looks to be around 3 months old, mostly grey tabby markings with some brown markings on her back. Some people nearby said it had been wandering around most of today (but not before then) and the state of its ears and teeth makes me think she hasn’t been outside for long. I’m guessing her family are somewhere around here…”

If you know whose kitten this may be, please contact Jeff by email: dougherty.jeffrey [at] gmail.com
