A number of great art and art education events are happening this month in the area, including exhibitions by local artists and Tibetans in Philadelphia, independent film screenings, and a master class by a renowned cinematographer. Exhibition, film screenings and master class at Scribe Video Center (4212 Chestnut St, 3rd floor)

• Stop by Scribe Video Center to check out Landscape Renewal, an exhibition featuring the works of seven artists working in diverse media: Richard Watson, Ted McGhee, Jonathan Pinkett, Alvin K.Nurse, Amir Lyles, Asaake Denise Jones, and Jerry Puryear. Kalachakra (The Wheel of Life) colored sand mandala.

Don’t miss the chance to see the Tibetan artist, meditation teacher, and former Buddhist monk Losang Samten at the Philadelphia Folklore Project (735 South 50th St). He returns for his annual residency at PFP from Monday, Nov. 18 to Friday, Nov. 22 and will be working daily from 1 to 7 p.m., to create “The Wheel of Life” mandala in colored sand. All are welcome to stop by and observe Samten through the spiritual process of creating The Wheel of Life. The program is free. Community Supported Arts, a program recently launched by the Philadelphia Folklore Project, is modeled after traditional CSAs, but instead of fruits and vegetables shareholders receive one-of-a-kind works of art from local folk artists.

This is how it works: Nine artists each make fifty unique pieces of art for fifty shareholders, so each shareholder receives nine pieces of art. Shareholders will get a chance to meet the artists at an exclusive preview party and dinner at PFP on September 21. The collection of art will be ready for pick up on December 7 at another shareholders-only dinner party with artists.

Each share costs $350+tax and can be purchased Saturdays at the Clark Park Farmers’ Market, online or by mailing a check to PFP’s gallery at 735 S. 50th Street, Philadelphia, PA 19143.

The participating artists are: Ra’sheeda Bey, Alma Luz Castro, Maisaloon Dias, Stephanie Hryckowian, Christina Johnson, Eric Joselyn, Marta Sanchez, Pang Xiong Sirirathasuk Sikoun, and Matthew Smith. You can stop by the PFP gallery to see a sample of each artist’s work.

Ayca Yesim is a Turkish music singer who performs in New York Philadelphia area. Classical Turkish music is a centuries old music tradition which was passed from generation to generation by means of personal training rather than through written instructions. PFP invites you to gather with artists and cultural workers committed to folk arts to discuss what is on your mind and share your experiences.

Mediamaker Barabara Grant weaved folklore and oral history together into a multimedia piece that she will show tonight from 6-8 p.m. at the Philadelphia Folklore Project (735 South 50th). When My Mother Broke Her Leg (and came to live with me) is about “aging, advocacy, health care policy” and her mom. Her piece is also about reconsidering the role of a child, family history and health care equity, particularly for seniors.
