Philly Homebrew Outlet has closed their shop at 47th and Woodland after eight years of operation. The West Philly location was Philly Homebrew’s final store.

“We are sad to say today, March 11th, is the day we have finally decided to close the doors permanently and shut down Philly Homebrew as a business,” reads an email newsletter message by Philly Homebrew co-owners, Jimmy McMillan and Nick Less, sent out on Monday. “Our final store in West Philly is locked up [and] will be no more.”

Philly Homebrew Outlet was launched in 2011 when McMillan and Less purchased Barry’s Homebrew and moved it from South Philadelphia to Kensington. The business opened its second, West Philly location in 2016 and later expanded to three stores.

Who said poetry doesn’t go with beer? There’s a chance to try it out this Saturday (April 28) at the West Philly shop of Philly Homebrew Outlet where the Spring 2018 edition of their book reading series will be held. Local authors James Hoch, Rachel Howe, Steven Kleinman and Susan Barr-Toman will read from their work.

Also, enjoy some popcorn, and homebrew beer and wine, of course.

The event, which will be held from 5:30 until about 7:45 p.m., is free and open to the public. You can RSVP here. The shop is located at 1314 S. 47th St.

Also, on Saturday, but a little earlier – from 2-3 p.m. – PHO West will present a Sourdough Bread workshop on the basics of creating and maintaining your own sourdough starter. This event is also free and open to the public. More info can be found here.

Here’s some exciting news from Philly Homebrew Outlet (PHO). The local shop, which has locations in Kensington and West Philly, has recently expanded to New Jersey, where they have also started offering free classes on Thursdays. But that’s not all. Now their classes have their own Facebook event pages with more information instead of general posts on their Facebook/Twitter pages. As of now events will be published a week prior to the event date.

We recently caught up with Jimmy McMillan and Nick Less, co-owners of Philly Homebrew Outlet, while they shopped for a new truck for their growing business, which includes a recently opened West Philly location at 47th and Woodland.

McMillan and Less used to shop for home-brew supplies in the late 1990s in South Philadelphia at Barry’s Homebrew Outlet. The owners decided to sell after 15 years in business, and McMillan and Less jumped at the chance to go from customers to owners. They moved the business to South Kensington and continued to develop a sizable fan base in West Philly after five years through internet sales and occasional visitors from the other end of the El.

So they decided to open a second location.

“That was the first place we saw. The price was great, the location was great and we liked being next to the West Philly Tool library because we have a D.I.Y. customer base,” said McMillan.

Being a neighbor to the University of the Sciences and its Brewing Science Certificate program can’t hurt business either.

At any given day, the new location sells more than 45 different varieties of hops, over 45 different varieties of yeast and some 40 different types of barley or grain. There’s also a brewing facility to host home-brew club members who need space to brew. In addition to brewing supplies, the shop also carries a variety of winemaking and cheesemaking supplies along with kombucha, kefir and yogurt kits.

“The session IPA kits are one of our best sellers,” McMillan said. “It’s a low alcohol IPA beer where you can drink three or four of them without worrying about falling down the stairs.” 

They also offer free classes and clinics on making everything from beer to wine to cheese every Tuesday at 6 p.m. and every Saturday at 3 p.m. that guide you through the process and give you recommendations.

For years my father talked about the case of beer I bought him for Christmas in 1990. This was still mostly yellow beer days and my Dad was a devoted yellow beer drinker. But this was a case of Dock Street Amber Ale, the beer that for many in Philly back then provided our first taste of a locally brewed craft beer.

Twenty five years later Dock Street is back in the bottled beer business, just in time for the holidays. Between them, the new home brew place on Woodland Avenue and Local 44, there are plenty of opportunities to buy local for the beer lover on your list or to transform yourself into a good and proper beer snob.
