The Penn Division of Public Safety is reporting that due to power outages in West Philadelphia traffic lights are out Monday morning in the following locations:

• 34th and Market
• 38th and Walnut
• 39th and Walnut
• 40th and Walnut
• 34th and Chestnut
• 38th and Chestnut

Police are on location directing traffic. Commuters should expect delays.

Many homes in Spruce Hill and Cedar Park lost power last night, beginning shortly before 7 p.m. Power at some homes was restored about 40 minutes later, while other buildings were without much longer.

A fire broke out on the top of a utility pole near 47th and Cedar, according to a reader report.

“After the PECO guy was done extinguishing the fire, the fire dept turned their hose on it for a while. They managed to fix the pole and restore the power well before morning, which was nice,” writes Jen, who took the photo above.

No injuries were reported.

Some of our readers wrote to tell us about a loud, window-shaking boom they heard in the Spruce Hill area near 46th and Locust on Friday morning, shortly before 7 a.m., and were wondering if it was some kind of an explosion. So here’s what we found out: Police say the noise came from a blown transformer near 46th and Locust Streets, which caused temporary power loss in some households in the area.

No injuries were reported, according to police.

Power went out to hundreds of homes concentrated around 44th and 45th Streets from Pine to Chester at about 7:45 p.m. on Wednesday night. Scattered outages have been reported as far west as 48th Street and as far south as Springfield Avenue.

A PECO spokesperson said that crews were on the scene of an “equipment issue” in the neighborhood. They estimated that the power would be restored by 11 p.m. Wednesday night.

UPDATE (3:00 p.m.): Residents near 50th and Hazel, who lost their power last night, reported another power outage this morning, around 11:30 a.m. Power was restored by 12:30 p.m., according to a West Philly Local reader report.

11:09 a.m.: A blown transformer near 50th and Cedar caused power outage that left over 100 residents, PECO customers, without heat on one of the coldest nights of the year. The power outage happened on Wednesday night between 9:30 and 10 p.m. PECO crews responded, but power didn’t come back until 6 a.m. this morning, CBS Philly reports. Houses on and around 50th Street between Hazel and Cedar Avenues were affected by the outage.

The temperatures fell below 10 degrees last night. A shelter was set up at the Samuel B. Huey Elementary School at 52nd and Pine for those who needed relief from the cold.

We’ve been getting reports of a power outage near 46th and Farragut between Spruce and Locust Streets. A neighbor, Christina Bach, tweeted today: “51 residents of S. 46th St without power since 9:45 p.m. last night. We are sweltering!”

West Philly Local reader Ellen Liebman whose friend Christina lives on that block sent in a note that PECO is finally on scene. We are trying to contact them for more information about what’s going on.

“It seems to be underground, so they are just going to be digging holes in everyone’s back yard until they find the problem,” writes Ellen. “They have already spray painted the lines. Christina had to take her three dogs in her car to a friend’s house, but she can’t stay overnight. No one has been in contact about a place to shelter – and taking three dogs to a hotel is a challenge.”

UPDATE (5:20 p.m.): About 100 customers are experiencing a service interruption due to some issues with underground equipment and cable in the area, according to PECO spokesperson Liz Williamson. “Crews have been working to make repairs to both the equipment and the cable and we anticipate having power restored to those customers by this evening,” Williamson said in an email. But some neighbors affected by the outage were told that the power should be back by midnight.

We’ve also received a report from a resident near 57th and Market who says her power has been out since 8 p.m. last night. “This is a mess! Every time we call, there’s a different reason why the power is out and a different projected time as to when our power will be back on,” Lori Coleman posted on the West Philly Local Facebook page.

UPDATE (7/19/13): The power near 46th and Locust was restored on Thursday around 8 p.m.
