Update: Service was restored to all the affected residents just before midnight last night.

11/28, 5:48 p.m.: About 930 residents lost their power on Tuesday night, shortly after 11:00 p.m., in the Spruce Hill and Garden Court areas due to an issue with an underground cable at 49th and Spruce Streets, according to PECO spokesperson Liz Williamson. Service was restored to about 865 of those residents by about 2 a.m. Wednesday morning.

There are currently 65 residents in the vicinity of 49th and Spruce Streets without service. “PECO has already contacted those customers to let them know that we are working to replace the underground cable in their area and that their service may not be restored for several hours while we make repairs,” Williamson said at about 5 p.m.

We have learned that there were still a number of West Philly residents without power as of last night as a result of Hurricane Irene. Resident Ben Jacobs wrote us that there was no power on the 400 block of S. 43rd Street since 9 a.m. yesterday morning.

PECO couldn’t provide estimates for West Philadelphia in particular, but there are 5,000 PECO customers in Philadelphia County without power today. Director of Communications for PECO Karen Muldoon Geus said in an email that they expect that power to some 90 percent of customers will be restored by Wednesday and the remainder by the weekend.

Temporary power lines supplying electricity to University Mews at 45th and Spruce, one of several buildings along Spruce Street that was without power on Thursday.

PECO crews worked into Friday night to finally restore full power to about 800 residents along Spruce Street between 43rd and 45th Streets. The outage began early Thursday morning when a Philadelphia Gas Works crew reportedly looking for a leak accidentally severed a power line that powered several buildings along Spruce Street. Power remained out to most residents through late Thursday.

Residents of University Mews at 45th and Spruce got full power back late on Friday thanks to two large generators placed along 45th Street near Spruce. The switch from generators to full power was completed at 9:06 on Friday.
