West Philly grows again… and again and again. If your child needs something and you don’t want to pay retail, check out the “West Philly Grows Again” kids’ consignment sale this Saturday, Oct 5. This is an annual event benefiting St. Mary’s Nursery School, so you’ll also be contributing to a great cause.
As always, there will be tons of great deals on clothing, toys, games, and other things that local kids have outgrown, all in great condition. The sale will be held at St. Mary’s Nursery School (3916 Locust Walk) on Saturday, from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
A limited number of Friday evening (9-10 p.m.) pre-sale tickets are available. The cost of the ticket ($20) will offset the cost of renting the space and running the sale. The ticket is good for a child-free shopping evening complete with wine and cheese. Please contact the West Philly Grows Again team at: westphillygrowsagain@stmarysnursery.org for more details and availability.

The 2010 move-out sale. (Photo courtesy Penn News)
It appears that the salad days of discount mini-fridges, 4-year-old TVs and bargains of all shapes and sizes that signal the end of another school year at Penn are over.
PennMOVES, the university’s organization that in the past has collected discarded stuff from students as they clear out of the dorms, will not conduct the annual sale that had people lining up in past years. PennMOVES is still collecting the stuff this week, but instead of the sale the items will go directly to Goodwill stores around the area.
Much of the merchandise will go toward stocking a new Goodwill store in West Philly at 5050 Parkside Avenue in late summer/early fall.
“A sale at Penn is no longer necessary,” according to a PennMOVES statement.
It is still unclear how this may impact the curbside treasure trove that usually starts to build this time of the year, a time many locals refer to as “Penn Christmas.”

Hundreds of tools will be available at the 5th annual tool drive and sale. (Photo courtesy West Philly Tool Library).
On Saturday, March 16, the West Philly Tool Library, a community-based tool lending library, invites neighbors to its 5th annual tool sale and tool drive. The event will be held from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. at 1314 S. 47th Street (between Woodland and Grays Ferry Avenues).
This is a great opportunity to pick up tools at super low prices (starting at just $1) and to support the Tool Library. A large selection of tools will be available, including circular saws, screwdrivers, hammers, gas-powered lawn care tools, wrenches, pliers, and many more.
Also, if you have tools you don’t need, bring them to this event and Tool Library will put them into productive community service. All donations are tax deductible and Tool Library staff members will be on hand to process your donations and provide receipts for tax purposes.
Coffee and light refreshments will be served.
