The grass at Clark Park? Let’s talk

Posted on 02 July 2011 by Mike Lyons

park

Speaking of Clark Park … it is bound to see a lot of use this holiday weekend. Some rumbling has started about people and pets being on the grass, which is starting to turn a little beige. The Friends of Clark Park posted signs near each entrance to the park asking folks to “give the grass a chance” for “several weeks.” But just today we saw a couple of parties there and lots of loungers, kids, etc. having a good time on the new sod.

We were hoping to start a conversation about this here. What should the rules be about the new grass at Clark Park? Would you be offended if you were asked in person to stay off the grass?

If that topic doesn’t float your boat, maybe you could share your thoughts about the changes at the park. We heard someone this morning say that the tables and chairs give it a “Europeany plaza” feel. Is that good or bad?

We came across this brilliant short music video (a little over three minutes) starring our beloved Clark Park and you all and we had to get it on the site. Thanks to filmmaker Joshua Wann (aka Esso) for letting us post it. Check out more of his stuff at shotbyesso.tumblr.com. Enjoy.

West Philly street vendors compete for Vendy Award

Posted on 01 July 2011 by WPL

Gigi and Big R Caribbean
Gigi and Big R Caribbean/American Soul Food is among five West Philly-based Vendy Award nominees.

It’s hard to imagine West Philly without its street vendors. Many of them have become so popular that people from all over the city come to try their food. Now one of them might get some award love in the form of the Vendy, a newly established in Philadelphia award which celebrates the best street vendors in the city.

The awards show will take place next Saturday, July 9, from 3 to 7 p.m. at The Piazza at Schmidt’s in Northern Liberties (1015 N. 2nd Street) and will feature the street food showcase and an intense cook-off between the chefs. One of the judges will be Mayor Michael Nutter (That guy is busy!).

West Philly will be well represented in the event with five out of the eight award nominees based on the left bank. Here they are:

Cucina Zapata (31st and Ludlow)
Gigi and Big R Caribbean/American Soul Food (38th and Spruce)
Guapos Tacos (Powelton Village)
Magic Carpet Foods (36th and Spruce St.)
Sugar Philly Truck (38th & Walnut St.)

Mouse

Today’s puppy is Mouse, a beautiful blue brindle American Pit Bull Terrier mix. She is currently living in a foster home.

Mouse is between 10 and 12 months old. She weighs approximately 25 lbs and probably won’t get much bigger than she is right now.

Mouse is playful and a delight to be around. She is wonderful with kids, cats, and other dogs.

If you are interested please contact Mouse’s foster mom Maddy at mdavishayes [at] gmail.com.
