Prepare for Death Bi Chocolate

Posted on 07 January 2011 by Mike Lyons

Brace yourselves. Death Bi Chocolate, the annual bake sale fundraiser for BiUnity, is this Saturday afternoon at A-Space (4722 Baltimore Ave.). If any of your New Year’s resolutions involve stopping or cutting down on your chocolate intake, then you need to put them hold for a day. This is worth it.

Death Bi Chocolate features large and small quantities of chocolate for sale in a variety of forms. Friendly folks will also be playing board games during the sale that are open to anyone. The sale runs from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.

BiUnity is a social and support network for bisexual people, their family and friends. The all-volunteer organization has monthly discussion groups and events, including a movie night.

Healthy Homes workshop on Saturday

Posted on 06 January 2011 by Mike Lyons

The Enterprise Center CDC, the Spiral Q Puppet Theater and the Philadelphia Water Department are joining forces this Saturday for a workshop on good nutrition, water quality, asthma prevention, fire safety and a bunch of other important issues for parents and children. The workshop begins at 10 a.m. at the Enterprise Center (4548 Market St).

Folks from the Water Department will talk about storm water prevention/pollution and the importance of clean drinking water. As a little enticement to attend, families will receive a free BRITA water filter and water test kit.

The children’s workshop sounds like it might be a little more lively. Puppets from Spiral Q will touch on some of the same issues with kids in their own special way.

You can RSVP for the workshop or get more information by contacting the Center’s Brian Mallon at 215-895-4010 or bmallon – at – theenterprisecentercdc.org.

Want to get married on the El?

Posted on 05 January 2011 by Mike Lyons

Mayor Michael Nutter will marry a couple around Valentine’s Day aboard the Market-Frankford El as it rumbles through West Philly as part of a tour of Market Street rooftop murals known collectively as “A Love Letter for You.”

SEPTA and the Mural Arts Program run tours of the murals from aboard the train – the best viewing spot – each Saturday. These tours have included at least one marriage proposal in the past. In February, Nutter will marry a couple chosen in a contest sponsored by SEPTA and the Mural Arts Program.

This is from the Mural Arts Program website:

Tell us why you would be the perfect couple to be married on the Love Train. Attach a video, a photo, a poem…be creative, be artistic! The winner will be selected by City of Philadelphia Mural Arts Program and SEPTA. To enter, email: events@muralarts.org

West Philly native Steve Powers and a collection of artists created the murals in the summer of 2009. Love Letter is a series of 50 rooftop murals running along the El tracks from 45th to 63rd Streets. The murals have also been captured in book form.

Here is a partial “map” of the murals (click to enlarge):

Clean, green laundry company considered for start-up help

Posted on 05 January 2011 by Mike Lyons

Here’s an idea: someone on a bicycle comes to your place, picks up your laundry, does it for you – including folding – and returns it, also by bicycle. Clean and green.  This exists and it’s called Wash Cycle Laundry. If you think this is a good idea, then you are not alone. Echoing Green, an angel investor in socially conscious entrepreneurial businesses, has named Wash Cycle a semifinalist for one of its 2011 Echoing Green Fellowships.

Now to be honest there are a lot of semifinalists – 224 to be exact. But that is out of 2,854 applicants. About 15 of those semifinalists will be awarded fellowships, which include start-up money to pay for health insurance, a stipend and access to legal and financial help.

Gabriel Mandujano, the former executive director of the Enterprise Center Community Development Corporation in Walnut Hill, started Wash Cycle Laundry earlier this year. The company does pick-ups and deliveries in West Philadelphia and Center City. You may have seen their bike trailers loaded with large blue tubs.

Fellowship winners will be announced in May.
