Hai Street Kitchen, the modern Japanese burrito restaurant, is opening its second location in Philadelphia this week, at the new retail space at 125 S. 40th Street (corner of 40th and Sansom). The opening celebration will take place on Thursday, Jan. 15, with free sushi burrito giveaway to first 300 customers, starting at noon.

The restaurant will officially open on Friday, Jan. 16. It will be open daily, from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. (the menu is available here).

Hai Street Kitchen is the fourth eatery at that location. The retail space at 40th and Sansom, which replaced an old church demolished in December, 2013, also houses Dunkin’ Donuts, Zesto Pizza, and Jake’s Sandwich Board.

Our readers may remember Kara, a black Lab mix with white nose and white chest, that went missing more than two years ago from the Powelton neighborhood. Kara ran away from her home near 36th and Lancaster on December 3, 2012 and was last seen running down Spring Garden Street.

Kara’s owners continued their search for the dog for many months after he disappeared. They posted numerous flyers and ads, including one on West Philly Local.

And here’s great news: Kara was found earlier this week about five miles away in the suburbs! Kara’s owner, Ayse Gürsan-Salzmann, an archaeologist at Penn, says that her dog was sighted and picked up by volunteers at Francisvale shelter in Radnor. “He was found near the railroad tracks at Merion station,” Ayse wrote us in an email.

This is amazing, and we’re very happy that this story has a happy ending.

Kara, who originally was rescued in Turkey and brought to the U.S., looks more mature now (he’s now 3 and a half years), but his owners recognized him right away when they saw him at the shelter.

A fire and gas leak were recently reported in two separate incidents within one-block radius.

The residents of Garden Court Apartments at 47th and Pine were temporarily evacuated Thursday night due to a fire in one of the apartments, according to reader reports. The fire was reported at around 7:20 p.m. Fire crews put out the fire, and most of the building’s residents were allowed back in the building an hour later. It’s not known what caused the fire.

A gas leak was reported early Friday morning, around 1 a.m., on the 4600 block of Spruce Street. A pregnant woman was taken to the hospital and several others were evacuated from a house with apartment units where the gas leak occurred. The pregnant woman was taken to the hospital for evaluation. PGW was on the scene to repair the leak, 6ABC reports.

A 26-year-old man was shot and killed in front of a residence on the 5600 block of Baltimore Avenue on Thursday night, according to police. The shooting was reported at around 9 p.m. The victim was found on the front porch, a few houses down from where he lived, with gunshot wounds to his head and chest. He was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead 15 minutes later.

Police say there is one suspect, a male, who was last seen heading eastbound on Baltimore Avenue. The description is vague.

Water mains on these Cedar Park blocks will soon be replaced (click to enlarge).

Cedar Park residents will see a major water and sewer main replacement work this year, according to an announcement posted today by the community association Cedar Park Neighbors. The Philadelphia Water Department (PWD) has contracted Nello Construction Company to replace water mains on eight blocks in the Cedar Park area:

• Beaumont St from 48th St. to 49th St.
• Florence Ave from 48th St. to 49th St.
• Florence Ave from 49th St. to 50th St.
• Florence Ave from 50th St. to 51st St.
• Saint Bernard St from Warrington Ave. to Florence Ave.
• Saint Bernard St from Warrington Ave. to Florence Ave.
• 48th St from Beaumont St. to Florence Ave.
• 50th St from Pentridge St. to Florence Ave.

The construction work is expected to go on for all of 2015, and there is no set schedule for when work on each block will be done. The replacement of old water and sewer mains is necessary to prevent breakages and system failures. The Water Department works to replace water mains approximately every 100-120 years, according to the project information.

Residents on the affected blocks should expect minor disruptions of water service during the construction work, for 1-2 hours while house connections are made and for 4-8 hours while water main connections are completed. Residents will be notified in advance when water service outages are scheduled, according to PWD. Construction hours will be from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Street parking during these hours may be restricted.

We have some good news and bad news. The good news is that “Death Bi Chocolate,” the terrific annual fundraiser/awareness raiser that includes awesome chocolate concoctions, is this Saturday, Jan. 10 from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. The bad news is that this is the last one.

The bisexual support group BiUnity is again hosting the event at the A-Space (4722 Baltimore Ave.). But this year it’s free, although donations can be made.

“We’ll still have an abundance of chocolate, hot drinks, board games, and socializing. People are welcome to stop by, join us, and leave with some chocolate,” said organizer Rachael Schechter, by e-mail.  “It’s just free this year.”

That’s because BiUnity is disbanding after the event. Donations are welcome and will be combined with the organizations leftover funds and donated to other organizations that have helped them in the past, including the A-Space and the William Way Center.
