West Philly in Pictures: Scenes From the Neighborhood

Posted on 05 July 2012 by WPL

Here’s a collection of great neighborhood photos submitted by our reader Katrine Lvovskaya. Katrine writes that she “wanted to include a mix of street scenes, buildings, and of course the gorgeous flowers and house silhouettes that are on their best display right now.” She doesn’t have individual titles for them, but altogether they can be called simply “Scenes from the Neighborhood.”

Found grey and white cat (48th and Trinity)

Posted on 05 July 2012 by WPL

This grey and white cat showed up at a house near 48th and Trinity about 10 days ago with no collar. A neighbor who emailed us this information suspects that she was an indoor cat as she only wants to eat dry cat food and if let inside is very well behaved. Please call 773 931 1319 with any information.

Composting and gardening workshops at The Dirt Factory this weekend

The Dirt Factory at 4308 Market St.

The Dirt Factory has been open since June 19 and is already seeing a pretty high turnout of neighbors dropping off compost. This Saturday (July 7) The Dirt Factory presents the first two in a series of workshops at their facility at 4308 Market Street. At 10 a.m. residents are invited to a composting workshop taught by compost expert Christine Tilles. She will teach you how to reduce the amount of material that you send to the landfill while creating compost for your garden in just a few months. Organic materials such as leaves, grass clippings, and food scraps can be converted into a rich organic material that plants love. You’ll also have a chance to see a few different backyard compost methods in action.

Also on Saturday, at 11:30 a.m. come learn about vegetable gardening in the cool season. Master Gardener Julie Cox will talk about vegetables that are grown in the Spring and Fall, and how and when to plant the fall crop. She will also discuss garlic, which is planted in the Fall to enjoy next year.

Both workshops are free and will also include prizes and giveaways.

If you are interested in attending any of these workshops, please RSVP at sustainability@universitycity.org.

Compost Drop-Off Reminder: neighbors can drop their compost off at The Dirt Factory every Wednesday, from 5 to 6 p.m. As concerns holiday hours, please note that The Dirt Factory is always open on Wednesdays 5-6 unless reported otherwise on this website: http://universitycity.org/dirt-factory.

Posted on 04 July 2012 by WPL

A reader, Nick, emailed us with this information:

“This morning a very friendly cat showed up on our back porch. She is very friendly and is wearing a flea collar. We are trying to find out if she has a home or is in fact missing. She seems really thin and was very hungry. If anyone know where her happy home is she would greatly appreciate it.”

If this is your cat, please email Nick at: nr3254111@netscape.net

Seventeen row homes were evacuated last night as a result of a three-alarm fire that started in a garage at 52nd and Pentridge, NBC reports (see video below). The fire began around 11 p.m. and quickly moved through.

Nearly 70 residents were displaced, 23 of them were transported to a Red Cross station set up at Ann H. Shaw Middle School on Warrington Avenue. No injuries were reported and no homes were seriously damaged.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. Neighbors said that kids were setting off fireworks nearby before the fire broke out, according to NBC.
